You might be asking, what are anchor verses? Anchor verses are somewhat like anchor stores. Anchor stores are large retail stores in a shopping center or mall. These are typically high-end stores that attract customers to the mall and drive traffic to the other interesting and fascinating stores in the mall, but the anchor stores are the primary “draw tenant stores.” Scripture can be like that also; the entire Bible is good and necessary, and it is filled with wonderful and helpful information. However, some verses are the “go-to verses” that bring immediate comfort, strength, and peace. These are the verses that you’ve hidden in your heart, verses that you can quote in an instant to calm your fears or that you can share with someone else to bring peace and comfort to them… These verses are like those anchor stores driving you to the other stores in the mall…the anchor verses can also drive you to the Bible to search out other verses that comfort and soothe your soul and spirit. The Bible is filled with beautiful and precious promises that should be hidden in your heart.
I hope that you will be challenged to have an anchor verse that will comfort your soul or to share with others to comfort them… Also, it is important to remember I Peter 3:15… But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts, and always be ready to give a defense to everyone who asks you a reason for the hope that is in you, with meekness and fear. Share the Word!
Please share one of your anchor verses and give a brief description of why this verse is so special to you. Is it a verse that you’ve held for a while, or is it a new verse for you?
Romans 15:4 is the verse that actually changed how I read the Bible and how I think about what I've read. It says, "what was written before was written for our learning and we through the patience and comfort of the Scripture might have hope."
What is hope? Merriam Webster says that hope is confident expectation. I can confidently expect God to do just what his Word says.
When I see the character of God and His attributes as I am read, I'm always looking and asking myself - What did you learn that can bring you hope and encouragement?
